♪ a bird in a gilded cage, a bird bereft of flight, a bird that cannot cry
Once upon a time, a very rich man had a happy life with his wife and child. Then one day, his wife died and he was driven into the deepest reaches of sorrow. Some people say he went a bit mad, even, but he was so completely decimated by his wife's death that he vowed to protect his daughter in every way he could so that she would always be safe. Suu was four years old when she was first locked in a house of her own, attached to her fathers. The large windows all throughout the structure were her only view of the outside world. The inside was decorated to be much like a garden or greenhouse, and her father put various animals (rabbits, cats, birds) in the cage to keep her company. As she got older, she looked at the birdcages in her room and began to think that her house was just like a cage too.

Nevertheless, as time passed she remained a quiet, thoughtful girl, always very kind to her father and abiding by his wishes without complaint. Sometimes when she was lucky, she would get to ride along in the carriage with him, but usually she was locked up tight in her little house. She would watch the people walking around on the street below her from her window seat, and would wonder about them. She was never allowed visitors of her own, and by the time she was fourteen, she'd still never been out of her cage. She grew very lonely, wishing she could speak with some of the interesting people outside. She spent her time reading faerie tales or listening to the conversations down below, or singing.

One day she was singing near her open window, and a woman down below happened to hear her. The woman complimented her on her beautiful voice, and Suu thanked her hesitantly, she being the first person she'd spoken to besides her father in ten years. They began to chat a little, the woman wondering if Suu was the mysterious girl who's father locked her up in a magnificent cage. She didn't know she'd ever been heard of, and so said that she was. The woman smiled, introduced herself as Oruha, and said that she'd come visit Suu's window every once in a while so that Suu wouldn't get lonely.

True to her word, Oruha came back, and they quickly became friends through their window chats. Oruha said that she was visiting from a city to the East, and told Suu stories. Suu would sing for her, and eventually they came up with a song together. One day, however, Oruha stopped coming back. Suu thought that she must have to go back to her home city, but she secretly worried that her father had heard them talking and had done something bad to stop Oruha's visits.

After that, she continued to watch the outside world, but stopped singing for fear of interacting with someone else. After Oruha's disappearance, she fell into the deepest state of loneliness yet, torn about wishing desperately to leave in any way possible, even if the only way out was death. She never blamed her father, but still feared trying to leave. Her father had been growing more and more frightening, barring her windows so that they would not open.

More time passed, and one day yet another person came to her window. He was a soldier who'd just returned home from his post overseas, and he happened to glance her sitting sadly in her seat near the glass. He found her beautiful, like some kind of princess, and though they couldn't talk to each other, their eyes met and something connected between the two of them. The soldier left after a moment, not wanting to be caught on the property of the madman who locked up his daughter, but he gathered rumors about her and began to wonder how to get her out. Her father was ridiculously wealthy, and so above the law, but perhaps...

Several nights later, the solider, named Kazuhiko, snuck into Suu's barred up house and belatedly introduced himself to her. He offered to kidnap her, and asked if she'd like to run away with him. Suu was more than a little shocked, and terrified that her father would find him, but the idea of being outside her cage filled her with a kind of hope and excitement she'd never felt before. She accepted, asking if they could go East to look for Oruha.

With that, they were off, Suu hidden until they left the city. Whatever her father did when he found out, she never knew. She grew to be very good friends with Kazuhiko as they traveled, and she slowly started to learn more about the world around her. Things will not go quite as planned, however, with Suu going to sleep one night and suddenly waking up somewhere she doesn't recognize, in front of a beautiful glass hotel.
